In an effort to bolster its defense, the Steelers signed veteran linebacker Mark Barron to a two-year, $12 million contract on March 17. Formerly a member of the Los Angeles Rams, Barron was about to enter his fourth year of a five-year, $45 million contract before he was cut by the team on March 8. He registered more than 100 tackles in both the 2015 and 2016 seasons, but failed to live up to expectations that came with his price tag in the past two seasons.
Originally selected seventh overall by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2012 NFL Draft out of the University of Alabama, Barron played 37 games with the team before being dealt to the Rams. Through 104 career regular season games, he has 624 tackles, nine quarterback sacks, and five forced fumbles. Although his tackle numbers have fallen off in recent years, he set a career-high in interceptions with three during the 2017 season.
