Trout Fishing Near Penn State’s University Park Campus

Fly fishing is suitable for catching nearly every species of fish, but in Central Pennsylvania, anglers most frequently fish for rainbow, brook, and brown trout. The closest fishery to the university campus is Spring Creek, just 15 minutes away. Spring Creek has been demonstrated to have the densest trout population of any trout stream in Pennsylvania, and special regulations permit trout fishing there year-round along the creek’s entire length.
Penn’s Creek’s headwaters are found by Penn’s Cave, about half-an-hour from campus. Catch-and-release fishing is encouraged on the creek, which features wild trout and runs for about 35 miles. Year-round trout fishing is also permitted on Penn’s Creek, but only on designated stretches.
Located about 20 minutes from campus, Whipple Dam State Park is maintained by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, which stocks the 22-acre lake with trout in the winter and spring. Another stocked lake can be found in Poe Valley State Park, which is less than an hour’s ride from the campus.
Anglers who fish in Pennsylvania waters generally are required to purchase and display a fishing license. More information, including Pennsylvania’s trout fishing regulations, is available at the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission’s website at www.fishandboat.com.
